Episode 5: Gigi Marvin
Gigi Marvin was a tough nut to crack. A diligent worker, she showed up to IPF every single day with a determination and focus that was hard to match. Gigi was not there to have fun- she was there to get better. Rarely, if ever, did she laugh at one of Steph's jokes. (This threw Steph off in a way that you guys would have paid to see.) But Gigi brought this focus and grit to the group that we needed- her contributions never went unnoticed.
Walter has designed, through trial and error, the equivalent of an assault bike fitness test. Basically, you figure out what your max RPM is and then based on that number, you are asked to stay in between a range of numbers for 30 seconds. You have 8 opportunities to do this. And by opportunities I mean that you try as hard as you can to not get kicked off the bike for failing.
We all failed. Some made 4 rounds, others held on for 6 or 7. But on the the 8th ride, Gigi was the only one left on the bike. Part of me was jealous, pissed at myself, exhausted, regretful, upset. Another part of me was STOKED for Gigi. "LET'S GO" was getting screamed by so many people in the gym, it was as if Tom Brady himself was there.
This bike workout was among the top 3 hardest things that I ever did at IPF, and that is saying A LOT. Gigi looked like an absolute maniac pedaling as hard as she possibly could, already at the point of exhaustion, but she did that 8th rep when the rest of us couldn't make it. She didn't waste any energy beforehand asking questions about the drill or laughing at peoples' jokes- she just did the work and she did it well.
Gigi told us, "Perseverance is a characteristic that has definitely helped me throughout the ups and downs of training to be an Olympic gold medalist. Being able to persevere through injuries, cuts, and other changes has allowed me to grow stronger as a person and player."
Gigi is a Minnesota native and played for the UM Golden Gophers from 2005-2009.
We asked her what she would eat if she could only eat one thing for the rest of her life. "Since my Dad is a buffalo rancher, we have the best grass-fed buffalo around. So I'm going with my dad's Filet Mignon... so delicious!"
Gigi plays for Team USA and is a two-time Olympic silver medalist. She is also a member of the Boston Pride in the NWHL. The Isobel Cup Final just happens to be taking place tonight at 6pm between the Boston Pride and the Buffalo Beauts. The game is at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell. Tickets can be purchased here.
